How Posing Actually Works: The Candid & Guided Approach

Forget Awkward Poses & Stiff Smiles—Here’s What to Expect

If the thought of stepping in front of a camera makes you cringe, you are not alone. Almost every family I work with tells me the same thing before their session: "We are so awkward in photos," or "My partner hates getting their picture taken."

If you’re worried about standing frozen in rigid, unnatural poses while I tell you to move your left chin down two millimeters—take a deep breath! That is not how we do things here.

My goal is to capture the genuine laughter, quiet snuggles, and playful energy that make your family yours. Here is a peak at how my guided approach actually works so you can show up feeling completely at ease.

1. Prompts Over Poses

Instead of forcing you into stiff, static positions, I use active prompts that get your family moving, laughing, and interacting naturally.

Rather than saying "stand there and look at me," I’ll give you simple, fun directions like:

  • "Walk toward me holding hands, and tell the kids who actually ate the last cookie!"

  • "Wrap Mom in a massive, high-energy group sandwich hug!"

  • "Whisper your favorite secret joke in your partner's ear in your deepest monster voice."

By giving everyone something fun to do rather than something to perform, the awkward tension instantly vanishes—and the smiles that follow are 100% real.

2. The Magic of Real Connection

Here is a secret that surprises most parents: you rarely need to look at my lens.

The photographs you see on my website that feel warm, emotive, and full of life aren't created by everyone staring intently at the camera. They happen when you look at each other, snuggle up, play with your kids, and enjoy being together.

  • Look at your family, not me: Focus on your partner’s smile or your child's giggles.

  • Embrace the messiness: If your toddler twirls away or decides to climb dad like a tree, go with it! The sweet, unscripted in-between moments often become the images you treasure the most on your walls.

3. For the Partners Who Dread Photo Day

To all the dads and partners reading this who would rather do almost anything else than spend an hour getting photos taken: I hear you, and I’ve got your back.

I keep my sessions fast-paced, relaxed, and completely painless. There’s no endless standing around, no cheesy smile commands, and zero pressure. My approach feels more like a casual stroll with your family than a high-stress photoshoot.

You don't need to know what to do with your hands or how to position your body—I will guide you through the entire process step by step, keep things light, and get you back to your weekend before you know it.

You Just Show Up & Love Your Family

You don't need to practice smiling in the mirror, and you don't need to prepare a single pose. Your only job is to show up, relax, and love on your favorite people—I'll handle all the directing and technical magic behind the lens.

Day-Of Photo Prep Checklist

Your Morning-Of & Pre-Session Cheat Sheet

Print this out or screenshot it on your phone! On the day of your session, keep things simple, take a deep breath, and use this quick checklist to stay on track.

Morning Preparation

  • [ ] Double-check the outfits: Give clothes a final check for wrinkles, lint, or rogue tags. Hang them up together so nothing gets misplaced.

  • [ ] Keep kids rested: Stick to low-key, relaxing morning/afternoon activities. Avoid big meltdowns or tiring activities right before get-ready time.

  • [ ] Feed everyone a light meal: Make sure everyone eats a full, mess-free meal before getting dressed. Hangry kids (and parents!) are no fun.

Packing Your Session Bag

  • [ ] Mess-free snacks: Mini marshmallows, yogurt melts, raisins or crackers (nothing that stains tongues red or messes up outfits!).

  • [ ] Water bottles: Pack straw/sip bottles so kids stay hydrated without spilling on their clothes.

  • [ ] Touch-up kit: Lip balm/gloss, hairbrush, hair ties, wipes for quick nose/face cleanups, and compact powder or blotting sheets.

  • [ ] Comfort item: A favorite small stuffed animal, blanket, or toy for quick toddler breaks.

  • [ ] Backup outfit for baby/toddler: Just in case of spit-ups or unexpected mess.

Final Check Before Leaving

  • [ ] Remove smartwatches & hair ties: Take off Apple Watches, fit bands, and hair ties from wrists—they stand out in photos!

  • [ ] Empty your pockets: Keys, bulky wallets, and smartphones should stay in the car or go into your session bag.

  • [ ] Dress kids at the location (optional): If you have a car seat-hating toddler or a long drive, put their main outfit top/dress on right after you park to prevent seatbelt wrinkles!

On the Drive & Arrival

  • [ ] Set a fun, low-pressure vibe: Play their favorite songs in the car. Frame the session as going to meet Aaron to play games and explore!

  • [ ] Arrive 10 minutes early: Gives everyone time to stretch, adjust clothes, do quick face wipes, and breathe before we start.

  • [ ] Let go & hand the reins to Aaron: Once you arrive, your only job is to laugh, love on your kids, and enjoy being together. I've got the rest!

Prepping Young Children for Photo Day

A Stress-Free Playbook for Parents

If you are feeling a little nervous about how your young kids or toddlers will behave during family photos, let me stop you right there and give you a huge high five: you are completely normal, and your kids are going to be great.

As a family photographer, I expect kids to be kids. That means running around, showing off their favorite dance moves, getting distracted by cool leaves on the ground, or needing a minute to warm up. I never expect toddlers to stand perfectly still or smile on command (honestly, that would be pretty boring anyway!).

My goal is to capture genuine laughter, real connection, and the sweet, playful stage your family is in right now.

Here are my top tips to make session day fun, relaxed, and totally meltdown-proof for your little ones.

1. Ditch the "Say Cheese" Talk

In the days leading up to our shoot, try not to place too much pressure on "behaving" or "smiling for the camera."

When kids hear "You better smile for Aaron!" or "If you don't sit still, we won't go get ice cream," it often creates unexpected anxiety. Instead, frame our session as a fun outdoor adventure or a playdate!

Tell them: "We’re going to meet up with our friend Aaron at the park, run around, explore, and play some games together!"

2. The Golden Rule: Fed & Rested

A well-fed, well-rested child is a happy child!

  • Plan around nap times: When we schedule your session, we’ll make sure it works around your child’s sweet spot during the day.

  • Pack mess-free snacks: Bring easy-to-eat treats that won't stain their clothes, mess up lipstick, or leave colorful residue on their tongues. Mini marshmallows, yogurt melts, mini chocolate chips, or raisins are lifesavers for quick energy boosts!

  • Bring water: Hydration keeps energy grounded, especially for outdoor golden hour sessions.

3. Let Go of Perfection (I’ve Got You Covered)

Once you arrive at our session, your only job is to relax, love on your kids, and enjoy being together. Hand the reins over to me!

If your child runs off, breaks away from a hug, or decides they only want to pick up sticks, don't stress and don't panic. Some of the most beautiful, iconic family portraits happen during those spontaneous, unscripted moments in between "poses."

If you stay calm, laughing, and engaged with your kids, they will feed off your relaxed energy. If you get frustrated or start sternly reprimanding them, they’ll pick up on the tension. Just laugh it off and let me guide the flow!

4. Bring Their Favorite Comfort Items

If your toddler has a special blanket, a favorite small stuffed animal, or a cool toy they refuse to leave home without, bring it along!

We can easily incorporate it into a few cozy shots, or use it as a familiar comfort item when they need a quick two-minute break.

5. We Move at Their Pace

We don't do rigid, stiff poses here. We play games! We do group sandwich hugs, race toward the camera, swing kids in the air, and tell silly jokes.

If your little one needs a break to eat a marshmallow, cuddle Mom, or explore a patch of clover, we take a breath and let them lead. We have plenty of time, and there is zero rush.

You're in Great Hands!

Remember: I’ve worked with all kinds of kids, energy levels, and personalities. Whether your child is shy and quiet or a wild tornado of fun, we are going to get incredible images that capture who they truly are.

Take a deep breath, trust the process, and let's go make some fun memories together!
